Predicting functional mobility in stroke

Writing in Disabil Rehabil Dr. Faria and team from Department of Physical Therapy, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais , Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais , Brazil showed that Maximal gait speed and quality of life (QL) showed the ability to correctly classy 86.4% of the group that was classified into 3 different speed groups according to the Timed Up and Go test (TUG).

The Timed Up and Go test (TUG is a test used to assess a person’s mobility. The test requires both static and dynamic balance. The TUG categorizes functional mobility according to the time that a person takes to rise from a chair, walk three metres, turn around, walk back to the chair, and sit down. During the test, the person is expected to wear their regular footwear and use any mobility aids that they would normally require. The TUG is used frequently in the elderly population. It is easy to administer and can usually be completed by most older adults
