Improving Medicare: What is an Accountable Care Organizations (ACO)

Accountable Care Organization

Accountable Care Organizations or ACOs are groups of doctors and other health care providers that have agreed to work together in order to treat individual patients across care settings. This allows physicians and clinicians to work together as a team to better share information and coordinate their treatment. The savings generated from lowering health care costs are then shared between the ACO and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) . It is also expected this closer coordination of services will allow physicians and clinicians to offer a more patient-centered care and improve the overall standard of care for their patients allowing for gains in patient safety, care quality, and value.
