Dr.Tomofumi Yamaguchi of the Department of Rehabilitation, Keio University Graduate School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan et al conducted a study about the

immediate effects of electrical stimulation or functional electrical stimulation (FES) combined with passive locomotion on the outcome measures of gait velocity and spasticity.
Study design:
27 stroke inpatients in subacute phase divided up into ischemic n=16 and hemorrhagic n=11
Therapy intervention: FES + passive locomotion-like movement.
Outcome measure:
Maximum gait speed + modified Ashworth scale taken 20 minutes after thetherapy.
The conclusions: although not statistically significant the group felt that FES combined with passive locomotion-like movement could improve gait velocity in stroke patients.
Stroke rehabilitation should include the LegTutor and 3DTutor to assist in gait velocity and Spasticity. The LegTutor™ system has been developed to allow for intensive hip and knee movemnt practice that leads to functional rehabilitation of the lower extremity. The system consists of an ergonomic wearable leg brace and dedicated rehabilitation software. The 3DTutor can be used on the ankle to treat drop foot. The LegTutor™ rehabilitation concept is based on performing controlled exercise rehabilitation practice at a patient customized level, set by the physiotherapist or physical therapist, together with real time and encouraging accurate augmented feedback on the patient’s performance.  The exercises are designed in the form of challenging games that are suitable for a wide variety of neurological and orthopedic injury and disease.
The HandTutor, ArmTutor, 3DTutor will allow for arm movement practice that will improve the upper limb functional rehabilitation scales.   Controlled exercise of isolated and multi joint practice is the main element to the physical and occupational therapists’ use of manual therapy.  The LegTutor™ system is used by many leading rehabilitation .centers worldwide and has full FDA and CE certification.
