HandTutor can improve Cognitive Impairments of TBI Patients

Lana J. Ozen and Myra A. Fernandes of the Department of Psychology, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada as reported in the Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology discuss the fact that long-term persistent attention and memory difficulties following a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) often go undetected on standard neuropsychological tests, despite complaints by mild TBI individuals. The group used a visual Repetition Detection working memory task to digits and manipulated task difficulty by increasing the cognitive load. Study group: 26 students with a self-report of 1 mild TBI > 6 months and the control of 31 non-head-injured. The aim was to identify chronic deficits after a mild TBI.
Outcome: mild TBI group took on the memory task significantly longer to accurately detect repeated targets this  suggests that slow information processing is a long term consequence of mild TBI.
Result: Post mild TBI young adults use a strategy of delaying their identification of targets so that they can maintain, and facilitate, accuracy in cognitively demanding tasks.
TBI can cause movement dysfunction in the upper extremity – arm, elbow, wrist, and hand and lower extremity, hip, knee and ankle which can lead to difficulty in doing everyday living tasks such as dressing and walking. The  HandTutor, together with its sister devices (ArmTutor, LegTutor, 3DTutor) allow occupational and physical therapists to tailor exercise practice that will improve fine motor (hand therapy) and gross motor movement ability. The Tutor system gives the patient biofeedback to show them when they are correctly moving their arm or leg. The Tutor system also allows the occupational and physical therapists to evaluate and report on the patients movement ability and treatment progress. The HandTutor, ArmTutor, LegTutor, 3DTutor is also used by home care patietns so that they can increase the amount of controlled exercise practice that they do between therapy sessions. In total the Tutor system provides an affordable user friendly and powerful arm, hand and leg rehabilitation package. The HandTutor™ is CE medical and FDA certified.
