  • The Herald Sun’s Belinda Tasker writes on October 10, 2011 that statistics from the Australian Orthopaedic Association showed 44,500 knee replacements and 36,000 hip replacements in 2010 this was a rise of almost 8% on the previous year. With the no’ of knee replacements rising by 9.4% to the number of hip replacements rising to 6%.
With  68% all total knee replacements (TKR) and more than half of total hip replacements (THR) paid for by private insurances, in addition to the number of under 55 year old patients having knee and hip surgery increasing over the past five years, it is not surprising that most of the operations were carried out in private hospitals.
Dr Mercer Australian Orthopaedic Association said that the main reason for knee and hip surgery is the intrusion into the patients lives of  the affected hip or knee, e.g hip or knee pain affecting their quality of life.
Improving functional outcomes in physical therapy for post hip and knee replacements is crucial to the return to normal life patterns. This can be done effectively with the use of the newly created LegTutor.
The LegTutor™ and 3DTutor system has been developed to allow for functional rehabilitation of the lower extremity. The system consists of an ergonomic wearable leg brace that is used together with powerful and dedicated rehabilitation software. The LegTutor™ system allows for a range of biomechanical evaluation including speed, passive and active range of motion and motion analysis of the lower extremity. These evaluations allow the physiotherapist to customize the patients exercise program that they do with the LegTutor so that it is in tune with the patients movement ability. This keeps the patient motivated to do continuous exercise practice which is the the mainstay of manual therapy.
The LegTutor™, together with its sister devices (HandTutor (HT) , ArmTutor and 3DTutor (3DT) ) rehabilitation concept is based on performing controlled exercise rehabilitation practice at a patient customized level with real time accurate feedback on the patient’s performance.  The exercises are designed in the form of challenging games that are suitable for a wide variety of neurological and orthopedic injury and disease. The LegTutor™ (LT) allows for the performance of intensive isolated and combination of knee and three directional hip treatment. This means that the patient performs controlled exercise of multi joints within the normal movement pattern prevents the development of undesired and compensatory joint movement and ensures better performance of functional tasks.
The LegTutor™ system is used by many leading rehabilitation centers worldwide and has full FDA and CE certification and can be used by children as well as adults.
