  • Inge-Marie Velstra, MSc, OT etal writing in PM&R on September 2011 provides information regarding the the issue of the responsiveness and reliability of different outcome measures currently used with patients who have impairments in upper extremity function and (2) their validity which is based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF).

This study searched the database of MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and EMBASE databases to find studies between July 1997 and July 2010 looking at outcome measures used to address functioning and disability evaluate upper extremity function. Studies written in English were reviewed.

894 studies that were included in this review and there were 17 frequently used outcome measures, 5 being patient-reported outcome measures and 12 being clinical outcome measures.

The aim of the study is to allow clinicians to select the most appropriate outcome measure for their patient as we present ICF-based content validity, and additional information on the reliability and responsiveness of the measures.

The ArmTutor™, HandTutor system has been developed to allow for functional rehabilitation of the upper extremity including shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. The system consists of an ergonomic wearable glove and arm brace and dedicated rehabilitation software. The ArmTutor™ allows the Physical and Occupational Therapist to report on the patients movement ability and progress during their intensive exercise program.  The HandTutor, ArmTutor™ and 3DTutor rehabilitation concept is based on performing controlled exercise rehabilitation practice at a patient customized level with real time accurate feedback on the patient’s performance. The exercise difficulty is set up by the physiotherapist and occupational therapist according to the patients movement ability. The exercises are designed in the form of challenging games that are suitable for a wide variety of neurological and orthopedic injury and disease.

The games challenge the patient to perform the exercise task to their best ability and to continue exercise practice.

The ArmTutor™ allows for isolated and a combination of elbow and three directional shoulder treatment. The HandTutor allows for isolated finger and wrist movement practice.  The system provides detailed exercise performance instructions and precise feedback on the patients exercise performance. Controlled exercise of multijoints within the normal movement pattern prevents the development of undesired and compensatory joint movement and ensures better performance of functional tasks.

The HandTutor, ArmTutor™ system is used by many leading rehabilitation centers allowing physical and occupational therapists worldwide and has full FDA and CE certification.
