A study by Kristina Fiore, Staff Writer for ”MedPage Today” and published September 08, 2011 and with a review by Zalman S. Agus, MD; Emeritus Professor University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Dorothy Caputo, MA, RN, BC-ADM, CDE, Nurse Planner notes that virtual reality and interactive video gaming might potentially offer some advantages over traditional therapy for patients rehabilitating after a stroke including improved motivation and increased involvement in therapeutic activities.

The author in addition notes that in this review of a number of relatively small and limited studies, there was some evidence that the use of virtual reality (VR) programs are associated with improved arm function and improved management of everyday activities (ADL), however in the literature gaming and VR can not be determined if these effects were longlasting.
Virtual reality (VR) may help stroke patients regain arm function and recover some ability to perform daily activities (ADL activities), researchers found.

Laver, MD, of Flinders University in Daw Park, Adelaide, Australia, “Virtual reality looks as if it could be a promising therapeutic tool, and it may offer greater improvements in activities of daily living however only a small number of studies have been undertaken.

Interactive video gaming often referred to as Virtual reality include the Nintendo Wii, have emerged as new treatment approaches in stroke rehabilitation. However as of now, there is  little information on their therapeutic effectiveness. Therefore more randomized controlled trials are needed. These will determine which types of (VR) are most effective.
